Ex-Rugby Stars and Lions Legends Prepare for Summer Ride with London Sportive

British and Irish rugby legends will once again gather for the second edition of the Ride of the Lions, a charity bike ride starting at Twickenham stadium in London and travelling to the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, the Aviva Stadium in Dublin before finishing at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.
Billed as the 'Triple Crown', the ride aims to build on the success of its inaugural edition which took place during the Lions' tour to Australia last year.
To prepare for the Ride of the Lions the legends have chosen the London Cycle Sportive on 11th May as their official training ride. Organised by Human Race, the sportive - which supports the charity, Access Sport - sees riders head down into the Surrey hills from Dulwich Park before heading back into London and finishing at the Herne Hill Velodrome - the only venue from the 1948 Olympics still in use today.
With three routes to choose from of approximately 50km, 100km and 100 miles, there are distances to suit all abilities. The Lions will be taking on the longer route in preparation for the grueling ride that awaits them this summer.
The Lions peloton will include legends such as Peter Winterbottom, Mike Teague, Craig Chalmers and Colin Charvis, who will aim to mix the challenging test of long distance endurance cycling with the camaraderie of the rugby pitch. They will be raising money for official charity, Walking with the Wounded and the Lions Charitable Trust.
Ride ambassador Peter Winterbottom, who toured with the Lions in 1983 and 1993 said: "We had such a great time on Ride of the Lions (ROTL) 2013 in Australia that we were keen to do it again in 2014. Hence, The Triple Crown 2014 was born. We have 10 Lions signed up and they will 'skipper' teams of rugby/cycling enthusiasts during the week. Guest riders can sign up for individual country legs or the whole trip. As ride ambassador Roger Uttley OBE likes to say, the theme is 'the spirit of rugby on a bike.'
Winterbottom continued, "As part of my training, the LCS on May 11th is perfect, and I am looking forward to seeing how I fare over the 100 mile course. I will recognise much of it as I try to use Box Hill for training whenever I can, and the Herne Hill velodrome will be great to see. I hope to bring several of my Lions riders with me as it is ideal training for The Triple Crown 2014."
