What is the Peak Epic?
It is the ultimate road biking/cyclosportive challenge; the toughest Peak District sportive ever! The route weaves it's way across the length and breadth of the Peak District on small country lanes passing over 14 categorised climbs (over 20 actual climbs) including Longstone Edge, Higger Tor, the infamous Winnats Pass at Castleton plus the Cat and Fiddle via Goyt Valley. Once the riders reach the finish they will have ascended 4000 metres in just 162km (100 miles). The equivalent of 3 times up Ben Nevis!!
Route Options
Three routes:
- Full Peak Epic - 162km 4000m ascent
- Peak Epic Medium - 100km 2100m ascent
- Mini Peak Epic - 60km 1200m ascent
Peak Epic Medium is a 100km version of the Peak Epic perfect for those not quite ready for the big one, but challenging enough. Finally we have the Mini Peak Epic a short 60km route ideal for those who are newer to sportives.
When and where is it?
The inaugural Peak Epic will take place on Sunday June 23rd 2013 from the Bakewell Agricultural Centre. Facilities at the start/finish venue include:
- Hard standing car parking
- Undercover event HQ/registration area
- Toilets/changing facilities
- On-site cafe
Bakewell Agricultural Centre is a stones throw from the centre of Bakewell providing a wealth of cafes, restaurants and pubs all ready to re-fuel you post event. In addition there are plenty of shops, walks, a big park and a swimming pool in Bakewell for any family or non-riders.
Who's behind it?
Oli Holmes of Endurance Fuel and Adrian Boyes of Dark & White Events.
Oli wanted to find the toughest 100 miles (162km) route the Peak District could offer. A route that had climbing figures more akin to a Tour de France mountain stage and to create a route tough enough to test the legs of those planning on riding the La Marmotte or the Etape du Tour or indeed an affordable alternative to the big Alpine sportives.
