Evans Cycles’ flagship RIDE IT sportive – the King of the Downs - is just a couple of months away, but don’t worry, there’s still some places remaining and a good ten weeks of training time.
The now infamous King of the Downs is up there amongst the toughest sportives in the UK, covering 115 miles across Sussex, Surrey and Kent. No less than six of the ten main climbs are featured in Simon Warren’s “100 Greatest Cycling Climbs” book, adding up to an energy-sapping total of 9,000ft of climbing.
It’s not all pain and suffering though as the route takes in some spectacular scenery, including the iconic Box Hill, and riders are rewarded with sweeping descents and idyllic twisting lanes that lead to stunning vistas as far as the eye can see.
For those who fancy a slightly less demanding challenge but still want to experience the RIDE IT crowning glory, there’s also a half route option which is equally as inspiring but takes in just the five climbs in the Surrey Hills. Riders on the full distance then continue onto the easterly loop where they’ll hit another five hellish climbs across the North Downs.
Both loops are well marked and have fully stocked feed stations supported by High5, as well as chip timing and mechanical support/ a broom wagon if needed. Every rider receives a pre-ride breakfast and a cooked meal on return, as well as a free souvenir goody bag.
Having sold out every year, and with places going fast again in 2015, you’ll need to hurry to secure a place. Plus, if you enter more than eight weeks in advance you’ll get the added bonus of a free High5 goody pack
