As one of the most obvious examples of the much-celebrated London 2012 cycling legacy, the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 is this year set to build on the success of its inaugural edition, and be even bigger and better in August 2014.
The event, which in due course aims to become the largest mass participation cycling event in the world, offers participants the chance to take on a 100-mile challenge on the same closed roads as the professionals, with the added incentive of raising money for a good cause.
Places in the ballot were snapped up in record time, but would-be participants can still ride the event on a charity place.
Blind Veterans UK provide vision impaired Armed Forces and National Service veterans with the person-centred services and tailored support they need to discover life beyond sight loss. To find out more about Blind Veterans UK's work, please see their website.
The charity believes that no one who has served their country should battle blindness alone. This is your chance to help them support more blind veterans by riding the Prudential RideLondon 2014.
To hear more about the life-changing work the charity carries out, watch the video below, which tells the story of Carl Adamson - one of the blind veterans directly helped by the charity.
Starting from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in east London, cyclists head past Canary Wharf and through the City of London before cycling west along Piccadilly and the A4. Riders cross the River Thames at Chiswick and pass through Richmond Park and the heart of Kingston-upon-Thames, before crossing Hampton Court Bridge.
Next, the route takes riders through the stunning Surrey countryside, heading south past Newlands Corner, Abinger Hammer and Holmbury St Mary before tackling the biggest ascent on the route at Leith Hill. After a short descent, it's onto the next challenge: the infamous Box Hill.
Heading north through Leatherhead, Cobham, Esher and Kingston, riders travel back into London over Putney Bridge to cross the River Thames for a final time. The route then follows the Embankment all the way alongside the Thames, heading past some of London's most famous landmarks as it makes its way across Parliament Square and up Whitehall.
The route then swings left through Trafalgar Square, with riders streaming under Admiralty Arch before a spectacular finish on The Mall.
Blind Veterans UK have guaranteed places in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100, so join the team to help thousands of blind veterans lead more independent lives.
Dolphin UK, a company that develops and distributes innovative assistive technologies for the vision impaired, has recruited a team of cyclists for the event who are raising funds for the charity. Three of the cyclists are vision impaired and will ride in tandem with their colleagues.
Jess Price, Sales Co-Ordinator, said: "At Dolphin we wanted to support the fantastic work of the Blind Veterans organisation, while at the same time getting fit and having fun".
There is also a corporate relay option, which allows four colleagues to enter the UK's largest cycling challenge. Each member of the team covers approximately 25 miles in a relay. Teams must be male-only, female-only or mixed (two male, two female).
