Pre-registration for the 2016 Maratona dles Dolomites is now open. Taking place on Sunday 3 July, the event is world-renowned for being one of cycling's toughest and most beautiful challenges.

The event usually attracts over 30,000 applicants from more than 70 countries, of which only 9,000 will be lucky enough to secure a place via the ballot.

The draw for places will take place at the end of November, and the field normally comprises half Italians and half international riders. In 2015 over 1,000 British riders took part, including Cyclosport's own Andy Dawson. You can read his review HERE

Places are also available via official tour operators and charities. On 24 November a second wave of tickets will be made available, and in March 2016 further places will be released.

The route of the 2016 Giro d'Italia is set to pay homage to the thirtieth edition of the Maratona. The routes on offer at the Maratona itself will remain unchanged, with riders choosing between the Maratona (139km and 4,230m of climbing), Medio (106km 3,130m of climbing) and Sellaronda (55km and 1,780m of climbing) courses.

Key climbs on the route include the Passo Campolongo (1875m), Passo Pordoi (2239m), Passo Sella (2244m), Passo Gardena (2121m), Passo Giau (2236m) and the Passo Valparola (2200m).

Once again all routes will start in La Villa and finish in Corvara. The event will continue to be broadcast live from 06.15am.

To celebrate the thirtieth edition of the event the organisers have commissioned a new logo, "symbolising the long journey of sweat, passion, dreams and madness" that is the Maratona. Italian clothing manufacturer, Castelli will once again be the event's official kit provider.
