Sunday 27th October will see the culmination of the Wheels in Wheels Events season with the Tour of Worcester sportive. Based at the impressive Worcester Racecourse, the event has proved a popular end of season sportive, thanks in part to its picturesque routes through the Worcestershire countryside, with a few testing hills thrown in along the way.
There will be two routes available on the day: the long route at 92 miles/ 148kms, and a shorter - but no less testing - 62mile/ 100km option. The longer route is based on a 2007 Tour of Britain stage, taking in many of the iconic climbs in the local area, along with a few other ones they didn't use just for good measure. Both routes are quite hilly, so even the shorter route should not be underestimated.
Both routes head out of Worcester in a clockwise direction taking in the classic climbs of Malvern and Ankerdine, before the long route splits off to take in an extra loop towards Tenbury Wells. Following a short excursion into Shropshire, the course returns to meet the short route again, and from here there is the chance to tackle the "killer option" of the 25% Wynniattes Way. For those not feeling quite so fresh, fear not, as an easier option is clearly marked one mile before the climb. After this it's a lumpy return to the finish via Holt Fleet and five listed climbs, before a hot meal awaits you back at the racecourse.
The start/finish is at Worcester Racecourse in the centre of Worcester, with an easy run in and out of the city, and a cycle route finish to avoid the traffic. There's also plenty of free car parking on site next to registration, just follow the signs from the entrance.
Both routes will be fully signposted, with well-stocked feed stations, full mechanical back up and a broom wagon should all else fail. Free tea and coffee will be available before the start, as well as a snack after for all finishers.
