The Living Coast Charity Bike Ride
01/07/2018 - Sussex - Charity Ride
Rating:
Last year this event was run as the Brighton & Hove Mayor's charity bike ride (around the Biosphere boundary). This year we have teamed up with Brighton Housing Trust and The Living Coast Partnership to deliver this ride again. New this year we have a 30 mile (Devil's Dyke Loop) option as well as the 58 mile classic around the Biosphere boundary in the Sussex countryside. Start & finish at The Velodrome, Lime Tree Walk, Preston Park, Brighton.
The classic ride is a 58 miles long circular ride and roughly follows the boundary of the UNESCO Wortld Biosphere Region, The Living Coast. After heading south to the coast and then east along the seafront cycle lane and Undercliff Walk, riders follow the A259 to Newhaven before heading north. After a quick refreshment stop at Rodmell riders continue on to Lewes, Cooksbridge and up to Wivelsfield Green where we have an extra refreshment stop this year. Riders then head down to Ditchling, Clayton and Hurstpierpoint before cycling to Woods Mill, headquarters of the Sussex Wildlife Trust for another refreshment stop.
After Woods Mill, riders head south through Small Dole, Upper Beeding and Bramber before crossing the A27 at Shoreham and using the old Toll Bridge to cross the River Adur. Then they weave their way back to The Velodrome in Preston Park (where riders started out from).
The road ride is a medium distance ride with hills but as it is largely skirting around the edges (of the Downs) it avoids the worst of them.
The event is part of The Greater Brighton Cycle Challenge which is being held on the same day at The Velodrome. Anyone who has registered on The Living Coast ride and feels they need to cycle a bit more when they return can take part in the Veldrome event for free.
New this year is a 30 mile Devil's Dyke Loop which involves heading out onto the South Downs via the Dyke Trail before descending to Poynings and Fulking and shortly thereafter joining up with the Classic ride, just in time for the refreshment stop at Woods Mill.
The ride is fully supported with an emergency phone number, mechanical support, First Aid and help if you or your bike breaks. There are three waterstops where refreshments are free (one for the Devil's Dyke Loop). At the start / finish, there are refreshments that can be bought with public toilets and the park cafes nearby. There is lots of parking (charges apply) in and around the park.
