The 2011 Verenti Dragon Ride Wales will take place on Sunday 5th June 2011. One of the original annual cyclosportives in the UK, the Dragon Ride is also currently the largest open road event and was hailed by Cycling Weekly as "The UKs Premier Cyclosportive". The first UK sportive to gain access to the UCI calendar, the Dragon is also working to gain acceptance from the UCI as the UK round of the Golden Bike world series.
The ride offers 3 distances, 45, 120 and 200kms over the challenging climbs of the South Wales Valleys. The longer route use the classic Category 1 climbs of the Bwlch and Rhigos, with 3000m of climbing on the longer "Gran Fondo" ride. The longer ride skirts the bleak but beautiful Brecon Beacons.
The 2011 event will follow a slightly different rout than in 09/10 due to road closures caused by new windfarm works. The revised routes will initially head south along the Heritage coast before hitting the big hills at Port Talbot with a 13.5mile climb to the summit of the Bwlch.
Free pasta party for all riders, camp site and finishers certificate are new additions for 2011
The event is once again based at the Pencoed Technology Park, ideally located right next to junction 35 of the M4 and on the main London - Swansea rail link.
