Join us this Summer on 14th August for a 60mile ride around the Southern edge of the Peak & the surrounding area that is as challenging as it is rewarding in celebration of the spirit of British cyclesport from a bygone era.
Once the ban on cycle racing on the open road was lifted in the late 1950s the gritty, determined British bike racer was truly born. Following in the tyre tracks of the likes of Tommy Godwin & Brian Robinson we aim to recapture some of that spirit.
OPEN TO ALL
We want everyone to be able to get involved with this celebration of the efforts of riders from a time where everything was tougher but you don't need to replicate the conditions exactly. We'd love you to ride on a vintage bike but it's not compulsory, so don't rush out and blow a load of cash on a vintage bike (unless this is the excuse you need, n+1 & all!). You are welcome to ride the event on any suitable bicycle that you wish but we would encourage you to ride on a vintage bike. So, pre-1990 is ideal but a classy modern steel bike is good too. In fact, in some ways it will be nice to see a UK made steel frame from the 50s or 60s lined up alongside a carbon disc-braked uber-bike of today.
THE ROUTE
Starting at the village hall in the small Peak District village of Warslow the course will take you up, over, down & around many of the lanes that have made the area such an integral part of Britain's cycling heartland. The halfway point will be at Flash, the highest village in England, where riders can re-fuel for the return leg. But there'll be no scientific research in the food on offer, no energy bars that pull your teeth out & no gels that have the consistency of the unmentionable. In tune with our inspirations riders will be treated to the timeless classic of a damn fine bacon sarnie (using locally sourced ingredients), a tasty selection of cakes & the obligatory cup of tea.
The second half of the route will dish out more great riding through the lanes before returning to Warlsow for a suitable recovery meal of pie & peas... and more tea, or course.
