An iconic route cycled by hundreds of people every year, usually over 4 or 5 days. But how about doing it in just 1 day?
The coast to coast is a box a lot of cyclists want to tick - it's obligatory for the cycling CV and provides some of the most satisfying and beautiful riding you can get.
A stunning 150 mile road ride from the mountainous Western Lake District, through the Yorkshire Dales, across the flat Vale of York and finally the Northern Valleys of the North York Moors, finishing by the sea in Whitby. Attempted by scores each year, but only a handful ever try it in one go.
All you need to do is arrive at the allotted pick up point on Friday evening from where you will be transported to the camp with your bike, get a good nights sleep then focus on getting from one side of the country to the other. Sounds too easy? Well, the route does take you over both Hardknott and Wrynose passes as a warm up to the rest of the day. So by the time you reach Whitby you will have covered 150 miles over hills, crossed Windermere, passed through quaint villages and probably wondered how much further at least once and "'This must be the last hill". To make it as pleasurable as possible there will be four food stops en route, with a wide variety of sustenance to ensure everyone is catered for, each manned by enthusiastic marshals who will be wishing they were on their bikes too!
Once you reach the finish line, all that is left to do is collapse and enjoy a well earned sleep, unless you feel the urge to sample some of Whitbys famous fish and chips. As Sunday arrives you will then jump on the bus for a ride back to your cars, head home for further celebratory cups of tea and heaps of cake.
This iconic ride will be the fourth to be organised by Open Cycling and expected to be yet another sell out. Entries open 7th July and the number of entries have been capped at 1000.
