The multi-distance event will be the second edition of this mass participation urban bike ride taking place on completely closed roads in an otherwise bustling city centre, including a stretch of Manchester's busiest motorway - the iconic Mancunian way.
Starting and finishing at Etihad Campus, Sportcity, the course will take you through the districts of Manchester, Trafford and Salford. The urban terrain provides access to roads normally off-limits to cyclists, giving you a new perspective on the iconic buildings and landscapes of Greater Manchester.
The event has three distance options, setting off in waves from 08:00 - giving you the option to Get Out and Pedal over 13 miles, Rule the Roads over 26 miles or Test Yourself over 52 miles. Suitable for all ages and abilities, the Great Manchester Cycle is brought to you by the organisers of the Bupa Great Manchester Run, so you can be guaranteed a safe and well organised event.
This event gives cyclists the opportunity to experience good flat traffic free roads with some technical sections to test their handling skills. From the start at the Etihad Campus riders will quickly get into their rhythm as they head along Alan Turing Way and Ashton Old Rd, there are some narrow section so riders will need to be vigilant as they speed towards the Mancunian Way. The excellent road surfaces will see riders quickly pass along the Mancunian Way heading west to Old Trafford. Once into Trafford the quality of the riding remains high with some technical sections around the Trafford Quays as riders turn back towards the Etihad Campus.
Riders retrace a similar route back to the lapping point at the Etihad, where those taking on the 26 and 25 mile routes must follow signage to continue. This route may be flat allowing for good average mph however, as riders complete more laps it will be a real test of endurance to maintain your good times on the undulating and technical sections on the route.
There will be a feed station in Trafford, allowing riders to stop and rehydrate and refuel. This feed station will also have a mechanical pit stop should you have any small mechanical issues with your bike (riders are asked to ensure that their bikes are in good working order when arriving at the event and that a minimum of a spare inner tube, puncture repair kit, tyre levers and hand pump are carried with them at all times).
The route will also be supported by moto marshals who can help respond to any incidents on course. Medical teams will roam the route and can be deployed to incidents as required.
Part of a 'Great' festival of sport in Manchester this summer, the Great Manchester Cycle will join a full programme that includes the UK's most popular 10k, the Bupa Great Manchester Run and the British Gas Great Manchester Swim.
Entry fee includes: accurate chip timing, a Great Manchester Cycle T-shirt, medal and finishers pack. There will also be a feed station on course to keep you hydrated and your energy levels topped up.
