FAQs...

Do I need to be a proficient cyclist?

This is a  significant challenge cycling across mainland Great Britain - over 900 miles - but it is an exceptionally rewarding one! You should be aware of the distances that are covered - normally between 80 to 100 miles each day, consecutively for 10-11 days. Whilst getting 'gym fit' can help, there is no training better than being out on the road and we suggest that you have completed several long consecutive cycles prior to the event. There are some tough climbs, particularly in the Lake District and Scotland. We can provide you with information on training. Remember you have plenty of time to train for this event and what better than to have such an exciting goal to train towards!

What cycling equipment do I need to bring?

You will need to bring your own bike - it must be in good condition, having had a recent service. We strongly suggest that you ride the route on a road bike rather than a hybrid or mountain bike due to the distances that you will be covering. We recommend that you train on the bike that you will ride on in the event so that you are used to it and comfortable on it. It is also compulsory to bring a helmet. PHASE will provide you with a comprehensive list of items to bring with you prior to the event. We will provide a track pump, mechanic kit and oil for our cyclists.

What support will there be during the event?

We will have a vehicle that will travel along with the cyclists, so there will be a support team through the entirety of the journey. They will remain as close as possible to the cyclists en route. They will be contactable via phone and will carry a bike mechanic kit.  The support vehicles will a carry a comprehensive first aid kit. These vehicles will transport all your luggage for you.

Will you allow for differing levels of fitness?

We hope that the group will be able to cycle together, but appreciate that this might not always be possible. We may stagger start times to try and accommodate everyone, following discussion with the team. Your safety is very important to us - we will gather medical questionnaires before the event so we can best assist you during the challenge. We will also try and organise some pre-event cycles so that you can get to know one another, but we appreciate it might be difficult to get everyone together depending on availability and where you all live.

Where will we stay each night?

Accommodation will be provided each night - these will be a mixture of youth hostels, hotels and B&Bs. Accommodation will be provided on the night of arrival at John O'Groats.

How will I arrive at the event and leave on completion?

We expect all cyclists to make their own way to Land's End at the beginning. After you have completed your challenge and reached John O'Groats, PHASE will transport you to Inverness (where there are onward transport connections) for you to make your own way home from there. We will be able to take bicycles back some of the distance for you - to the Midlands, with potential drop-offs.

Am I expected to raise the amount stated?

The cycling challenge has been carefully priced, using our knowledge of cycling challenges PHASE has been involved in previously (including London to Paris and Yorkshire Tour de France). Your participation fee of £300 will cover a portion of the cycling challenge, but not all of it. This is why we have set each cyclist a fundraising target of £1,800. The challenge is a long way away and targets can often be easily achieved if you begin fundraising early - you can also continue raising funds after you have completed the event too! We will support and provide ideas and information for fundraising.

How do I book a place on the challenge?

If you are interested in taking part or would like some more information then please email sarah@phaseworldwide.org. Once you have paid the participation fee of £300 a place for you on the challenge will be reserved.

How do I pay to book the challenge?

You can send a cheque payable to 'PHASE Worldwide' to the following address: Reginald Arthur House, Percy Street, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, S65 1ED. Or you can pay online here - if you choose to pay online please email your details to sarah@phaseworldwide.org
