Sunday 10 October saw scores of riders embark on a charity 24-hour cycling event at Wales’ national velodrome, raising over £17,000 for Welsh homelessness charity, The Wallich. 

The first event of its kind in Wales, Cyclone 24 saw business people swap their suits for lycra in a challenge of strength, determination and team spirit. Over a dozen teams descended on Newport’s velodrome at midday, taking it in turns to ride 250m laps right through the night. 

The event was a joint venture between Stills, a strategic branding agency, and Welsh homelessness charity The Wallich, who help give vulnerable people the accommodation and support to live safer, happier and more independent lives. 

Combined, the cyclists taking part completed a staggering total of 20,329 laps – an astounding 3,157 miles. On the road this would have been the equivalent of travelling between Cardiff and London 21 times. 

A team of six from BAE Systems led by captain, Gavin Crimmings, took top spot on the podium for cycling the furthest distance in the 24-hour timeframe. 

Speaking about the event, Steve Sulley, Director of Stills said: “We are overwhelmed with the support we have received for this unique event. Each and every one of the cyclists involved worked tremendously hard to help raise such a large amount of money, for which we are incredibly grateful.” 

Zoe Westerman, Corporate Relationships Manager at The Wallich, said: “The funds raised through this event will make a huge difference to the lives of homeless people all over the country. We believe that everyone deserves the right to feel safe and valued, and this money will help us to continue supporting vulnerable people across Wales.” 

The relay was sponsored by local business The Victoria Park Clinic, as well as award winning Cardiff-based PR agency, Effective Communication. Food and drink sponsors included 9Bar and Nuun.
