At Boltby Scar the short course turn for home whilst the standard and epic routes continue east for more stunning views, quiet roads and history at the ancient Rievaulx Abbey in the Rye Valley. The climb to Rievaulx Moor see's the epic route continue north along Newgate Bank up to Cross Holme, Cold Moor and Hasty Bank before descending through the trees to the rather picturesque Stokesley - the Mill here was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086.
A short respite from the hilly moorland terrain will allow you to recover before hauling up the epic Shepherd Hill onto Osmotherley Moor which feels remote - it's a proper adventure now! Heading east under the watchful gaze of the Whitestones atop Black Hambleton you will descend Hawnby Moor crossing rivers and passing grand manor houses and castles as you head back to Thirsk.
